Sculpture of powder-coated steel tubing and rusted steel panels hangs in the lobby of the Shasta County, California administration offices.

"A Higher Vision"

The city of Redding, California seems to have what could be described in human terms as a healthy self-esteem. Over recent years, they have built some of the most architecturally beautiful public structures, including the Sundial Bridge designed by world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. At a time when most were (and still are) making it a habit of cutting corners and accepting disappointing, imitative architecture, The Shasta County Resource Management office complex was moving ahead with an impressive, out-of-the-ordinary remodel of their Lobby. I was fortunate enough to be asked to be a part of this project.

Although not seen in the photo, the layered artwork flows throughout the Lobby space, across the face of a mezzanine, and completes a circuit of three walls. The fourth wall is all glass. The tall sculptural pieces are made of powder-coated steel tubing and rusted steel panels sealed with a clear acrylic.

As the project was nearing completion, the client asked me to design and build an additional light fixture in the same style as the wall sculptures, to be suspended from the ceiling above the entry doors. It was finished in time for their grand opening.

It’s inspiring to see smaller cities make the choice to demonstrate their ability to rise above the mundane.
And, Redding is a shining example of this.
